The approach
Minimal prep. Maximum preservation.
The conventional approach to veneers involves removing a significant amount of enamel from the front surface of each tooth. This is irreversible. Dr Docherty's philosophy is different — he uses ultra-thin porcelain and carefully plans each case to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible. In many cases, little to no enamel removal is required.
The result feels more natural because the underlying tooth is still largely intact. Veneers that work with your teeth rather than replacing them.
Every case is different. What's possible depends on the starting position of your teeth, your bite, and what you're looking to change. Dr Docherty assesses each case individually and is direct about what can and can't be achieved with a minimal prep approach.
Understanding your options
Minimal prep vs traditional veneers
Not all veneers are the same. The key difference is how much natural tooth structure is removed during preparation.

Types of veneers
Which type is right for you?
The right veneer material depends on what you're looking to change, the condition of your teeth, and your budget. Dr Docherty discusses all options at your consultation.
Dr Docherty's approach
Minimal Prep Porcelain
Ultra-thin porcelain requiring little or no enamel removal. Natural appearance, high durability, colour-stable. A conservative long-term option where clinically suitable.
Restorative
Traditional Porcelain
Standard preparation porcelain veneers. Required when significant colour, shape, or alignment changes are needed. More preparation involved but highly durable and aesthetic.
Entry point
Composite Bonding
Tooth-coloured resin shaped directly on the tooth. No enamel removal required. Less durable than porcelain but reversible and more affordable — a good starting option for some cases.

Who veneers work well for
Veneers are one option among several. Whether they're the right choice depends on your individual situation — assessed at your consultation.
✓
Discolouration that doesn't respond to whitening
Intrinsic staining from medications, fluorosis, or old restorations. Veneers can address tooth colour where whitening may not be effective, depending on the individual case.
✓
Chips, worn edges, or irregular shape
Teeth that have been worn down, chipped, or are naturally uneven in shape or length. Veneers restore the visual line of the teeth.
✓
Minor gaps or spacing
Small gaps between teeth can often be closed with veneers without the need for orthodontic treatment — depending on the size of the gap and your bite.
→
Crooked or misaligned teeth
Mild misalignment can be addressed with veneers in some cases. More significant alignment issues are often better treated with Invisalign first — or instead.
→
Teeth with significant existing restorations
Teeth with large fillings or previous crowns may be better suited to crown treatment rather than veneers. Assessed at consultation.
→
Active gum disease or decay
Any underlying dental health issues need to be addressed before cosmetic treatment can begin. Dr Docherty assesses this at consultation.

The process
From consultation to final result
01
In-Person Consultation
60 minutes at the Circular Quay clinic with Dr Docherty. Clinical photographs, digital scans, and a full assessment of your teeth, gums, and bite. You leave with a clear treatment plan and full cost breakdown.
02
Treatment Design
Dr Docherty designs your veneer treatment using digital planning. The number of veneers, the shade, the shape, and the preparation required are all determined before any work begins. In some cases, a mock-up can be created to preview the result.
03
Preparation and Impressions
Where preparation is required, the teeth are gently shaped and digital impressions taken. A temporary veneer is placed while your permanent porcelain veneers are fabricated at the dental laboratory.
04
Fitting and Placement
Your permanent veneers are checked for fit, colour, and bite before being bonded in place. Adjustments are made until everything feels and looks right.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What are minimal prep veneers?
Minimal prep veneers are ultra-thin porcelain shells that require little or no removal of natural tooth enamel before placement. The goal is to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible while still achieving the desired aesthetic change. Not all cases are suitable for this approach — it depends on the starting position, colour, and condition of the teeth.
Are porcelain veneers permanent?
Minimal prep veneers are often reversible because little or no enamel is removed. Traditional veneers involve removing enamel and are irreversible — teeth will always require some form of restoration after this procedure. The veneers themselves are not permanent and will eventually need replacing, typically after 10–15 years.
How many veneers will I need?
This depends entirely on your individual situation and what you're looking to achieve. Some patients need as few as 2, others 6–10 or more. The number is determined at consultation after a clinical assessment and discussion of your goals.
Will my veneers look natural?
Minimal prep veneers are designed to complement the natural structure and colour of your existing teeth. Because less tooth structure is removed, the result often integrates more naturally. Shade, shape, and translucency are all carefully planned and discussed before any treatment begins. Individual results vary.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, porcelain veneers typically last 10–15 years before needing replacement. Longevity is affected by habits such as grinding, biting hard objects, and oral hygiene maintenance.
Should I do Invisalign before veneers?
In many cases, yes. If your teeth are misaligned, straightening first means veneer treatment can be more conservative — fewer teeth may need treatment and less preparation may be required. Dr Docherty assesses whether this sequence makes sense for your case at consultation.
Does getting veneers hurt?
Where preparation is required, it is carried out under local anaesthetic. Patients experience varying levels of discomfort during and after the procedure. Some sensitivity in the days following preparation is common. This varies between individuals.
Am I a suitable candidate?
Suitability for veneers — and specifically for a minimal prep approach — can only be determined after a clinical assessment. Factors include the health of your teeth and gums, your bite, the degree of colour or shape change required, and your individual goals. Not everyone is a suitable candidate. Alternatives such as composite bonding, Invisalign, or crown treatment may be more appropriate depending on the situation.
How long does treatment take?
From consultation to final placement, veneer treatment typically takes 3–6 weeks. This includes time for the dental laboratory to fabricate your custom porcelain veneers.
Are veneers covered by Medicare or health insurance?
Cosmetic veneers are not covered by Medicare. Some private health extras policies may contribute a partial amount — check directly with your insurer.
